About Our Logo and Name

The word "bat" (fu, 蝠) in Chinese sounds identical to the word for "luck" (fu, 福). As such, bats are commonly recognized as a sign of good fortune in Chinese culture. Whenever five bats are seen together it is referred to as the wufu (五福), with each bat representing one of the five blessings of life and considered very good fortune. Our name in the native Hawaiian language is He Hale Kīlauea O Na ʻŌpeʻapeʻa ʻElima which translates literally as Kīlauea House of the Five Bats. You will find this ancient design motif throughout the artwork of Kīlauea House as a tribute to ʻōpeʻapeʻa, the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat, and the symbol of good fortune and continued blessings for our guests!
